OOC: This thread is for Nate and Gary's battle, and it occurs first in roleplay time. Nate should post first. He also has the first move. IC: After Lust and Kagirinai left the battlefield, Principal Sash walked back to the middle with her microphone, Maya by her side. "Wow, wasn't that great?" she said. "Next up, we have Nate and Gary!" She stepped back to let the boys have their space. Soon, they would know the match-ups for the nest week!

Nate had actually achieved his goal for the semester. Sinnoh had been named one of the top four teams that would be competing in the tournament, and his hard work had earned him the top spot. He was grateful that he and his teammates had been able to band together to earn this honor. He was going to do them proud.
He held his head high as he walked into the Battle Area. He would be battling his friend Gary, and he knew exactly who he was going to use. "It's your turn, Chelsea." He tossed a Pokeball in the air, and a Shinx appeared. She looked up at him with a small smile. She was ready for the challenge that lay ahead for them.

Gary confidently strode into the Battle Area. Though his team had not won, he had still earned the honor of battling in the tournament. He was going to work hard to win. He knew Nate, but he had never seen him battle. This should be interesting. "Hello," he greeted his opponent as he took his place opposite of him. The Shinx certainly looked ready to battle. Hmm... If he was going to use an electric type, Gary knew exactly who he would choose. "Check out my Pokemon. Come on out, Spirit!"
The Deerling appeared before his trainer. He looked back at him and smiled at him happily. <Are we battling?> He liked to battle. Looking forward again, he noticed Nate and Chelsea. <Hello there!> He could not wait to get started.

Nate gave Gary a small smile when he entered. "Hi," he said in return. "Good luck." So, he chose a Deerling, which was a normal and grass type. This was going to be interesting. Even if they had the disadvantage, he and Chelsea were going win. "I have the first move. Chelsea, use Tackle!" He liked to start off by testing his opponent's speed. The Deerling looked fast.
Chelsea gave Spirit a small smile. <Hi.> Type did not matter to her. She was still going to beat him! She flashed her teeth as she waited for a command. Upon hearing it, she ran straight for the Deerling as fast as her little legs would take her.

Gary nodded at Nate. "You too." It looked like he wanted to start off strong. They were going to stop him. "Spirit, dodge it and use Tackle!" This was the Deerling's first battle, but Gary was sure he could do well. He had been impressed by him when he had caught him. He was up to the task ahead of him.
Hmm... That Shinx wanted to go after Spirit. He would have none of that. He had been trained to flee from danger, and that learned speed enabled him to dodge the attack. Without stopping, he ran around so now he was the one aiming to Tackle his opponent. He could feel his energy levels rising as he accelerated.

Nate watched the Deerling dodge Chelsea's attack and come around for one of his own. Spirit succeeded in his Tackle. The trainer knew they were going to have to do something about his speed. "Alright, Chelsea, use Leer and Tackle!" Hopefully the Leer would help her be more effective.
Chelsea skidded to a halt when her attack missed. She looked around for Spirit but saw him too late. She was thrown back by the force of the attack. She was not worried, though. She quickly got up and Leered at the Deerling. Then she attempted another Tackle.

It seemed to Gary that Nate was quick to react and come up with a good strategy. That Leer was certainly effective. This was no time to worry, though. He still had some tricks up his own sleeve. "Ok, Spirit, use Sand Attack and Tackle!" This should take care of that Shinx.
Spirit froze when Leer was used on him. he was too afraid to move. He snapped out of it when he was hit by the Shinx. He winces slightly as he stood up. That hurt! He knew he could still win, though. He was excited that his trainer gave him something else to do. he zipped forward and flung up sand at Chelsea at the last second. Then, when she was distracted, he ran at her for a Tackle.

Nate's plan seemed to work. They had been able to slow down the Deerling a bit. However, now he was back on track. Chelsea was hit by the sand, making her unable to dodge. Nate knew she would not be able to use Leer, so he decided to just stick with her damaging move. "Use Tackle!"
Chelsea grinned in satisfaction when she was able to hit Spirit. <Take that!> She just needed to keep it up. She did not see the Sand Attack coming, though. She instinctively closed her eyes when sand flew into them. How was she supposed to see now? She fell back from the Tackle. She stood up, feeling dizzy. She had to try to attack, though, so she ran for the Deerling.

Gary was pleased that the Sand Attack had been effective. The Shinx had not been able to dodge and her own attack had missed. Spirit was doing well. "Alright, Spirit, now use Tackle!" He hoped this experience was giving his Pokemon a good confidence boost. They were going to go places!
Sand Attack had been fun. Spirit wanted to do it again. He was able to quickly run away from the Shinx when she tried to attack him. <Ha!> He wished his old friends from the forest could see him now. With great energy, he turned to dish out another Tackle.

Nate gritted his teeth when Chelsea's attack missed. "Try to dodge!" he called, but he knew it was no use. Spirit was too fast already without Chelsea's impairment due to the sand. This was going to be a difficult battle to win. It was best to stick to the most effective combination. "Use Leer and Tackle!"
Chelsea skidded to a halt when she felt herself hit nothing but air. She still could not see well, so she was hit by the Deerling. Frustration grew as she stood back up. She shook her head to get rid of the rest of the sand. Now she was mad! After leering at Spirit, she ran towards him for another Tackle.

Gary did not like that Leer attack. This battle was closer than he would have liked. He had an idea about that, though. Victory was still within his grasp. "Hang in there, Spirit. Use Growl and then Tackle!" If he was unable to dodge the next attack, at least he would not receive as much damage as previously.
Spirit shivered when the electric cat leered at him. He was too frightened to jump out of the way of her Tackle. He knew he was losing energy quickly, and he hoped his trainer had a plan. Growl? Cool. He tried to sound as menacing as possible while he growled at Chelsea. Then, stiffling a giggle, he ran in her direction.

Nate remained calm as the battle continued. Both Pokemon were wearing down, though Chelsea seemed more tired than Spirit. It was not time for him to give up. He probably only had one more shot left, so he would make it good. "Leer and Tackle!"
Chelsea felt satisfied when her attacks worked. Unfortunately, the Deerling was coming right back at her. The Growl caused her to hesitate, and then she was struck by Tackle. She felt dizzy as she stood up. She knew she could not take much more. She leered once more before charging forward for a Tackle.

Gary could tell this was going to be a close one. Spirit was hit, but he could still battle. The next attack would likely decide everything. He was going to have to rely on his Deerling's speed and reflexes to win this. "We're almost there, Spirit. Use Tackle once more!" This was it.
Spirit was knocked over once again, but he was still going strong. <You're pretty good,> he said to the Shinx. But he planned to win. If only his forest friends could see him now! He had enough energy left to zip back and forth, aiming for Chelsea at the last second.

Chelsea tried to dodge, but the Deerling was too fast for her. She collapsed after being hit by the Tackle. A moment later, she fainted.
Nate felt for his Shinx as she was defeated. He had worked so hard, but he had come up short. He knew his Pokemon had given it her all, though, and he was proud of her. "Nice job, Chelsea," he said, taking out her Pokeball. "Return." He looked across the field to Gary. "Congratulations. It was a good battle." He was looking forward to seeing him in the next round, for he was a tough trainer.

Principal Sash watched the battle with great interest. She did not know who would win until the very end. The two had been a great match-up. When Chelsea fainted, she stepped forward and said, "Chelsea is no longer able to battle. Spirit is the winner and victory goes to Gary!" She smiled as the people around applauded. "We will see him next week in the second round. I will see you all next week!" She hoped the next two battles would prove to be just as exciting as the last.
Spirit has gained three levels. He now knows Double Kick.
Chelsea has gained one level. She now knows Baby-Doll Eyes.
