I can do this.
That was what a young boy that had just arrived was telling himself as he hurried down the halls of the building that were to lead him to an office somewhere. It had been a bit of an exhausting trip, leaving home all by himself with no one to really look to for support as he frequently made himself anxious all throughout it just from thinking too much. That anxiety was still gnawing away at Adel right this very moment too, so he did all he could to keep himself psyched up for what he knew would be coming by repeating the same words over and over again. Additionally doing his best to not even think about how he was very alone here.
Soon enough Adel managed to locate what he was looking for, but his rushing to find the office that belonged to the principal left him almost breathless that he needed a moment to recover. Standing in front of the door hunched over and breathing harder than normal, he took the opportunity to just give himself another minute to think. Peeking up at the door with one eye, he already felt intimidated by what could be on the other side.
From what he already knew, Adel was expecting to possibly meet what would be his very first Pokémon beyond this door. Making him falter a bit after memories of his last attempt crept up in his mind. Remember why you're here... He had to remind himself. Taking one more deep breath once he felt well enough to continue.
Giving it another look, the boy knew that he needed to go in there, but he also knew better than to just barge in unannounced. So with one hand raised up and fingers curled, he tapped his knuckles against the door in the attempt to alert whoever was in there of his presence. Not very much strength was put into these knocks though, so it didn't seem very loud to him... Afraid that it might've been too quiet to hear, he quickly added to it with a timid, "...Hello?" After waiting a moment for a response, that same hand eventually went to reach for the doorknob.

Unfortunately for Adelmar, Principal Sash was away at a staff meeting, and Vice Principal Turner was currently taking her place in her office. He was currently concentrating on cleaning and organizing the desk. Why did Sash have to leave it in such a mess? Oh well. at least he enjoyed doing this type of work. He was concentrating so hard that he did not hear the knocking or voice asking for entrance. As this was the case, he could not know that the student was not being rude by entering the office on his own.
"What do you want?" Turner barked when he finally noticed the boy. He did not like to be interrupted in what he was doing even if it was part of his job. He wished Sash was here to handle troublesome students. "Haven't you ever heard of knocking?" He looked over the student in disapproval. Realizing he must be knew, he sighed as he swiped a piece of paper from his desk and marched over to the boy. "Here. Fill this out, and don't take too long." He stiffly held out the paper to him.

Having not heard any sort of reply, Adel wondered if there was anyone even inside. The moment he opened the door, he of course peeked into the room curiously to find out the answer. Noticing there was indeed someone inside. A man busy doing something at the desk. Is this the principal he was supposed to be looking for? He failed to realize that he just made a mistake, after he thoughtlessly already entered, once the stranger had noticed him. Giving Adel a completely opposite reaction from what he was initially expecting.
Startled by the unexpected question and tone of voice provided by the man he now assumed was the principal, the boy had visibly flinched. Immediately feeling confused about why the man had gone and yelled at him for seemingly no reason at all. He was supposed to be expecting him, wasn't he? At a loss for words now, he didn't say anything in response. Simply standing there as the question was soon followed by another one, becoming more upset once that disapproving look fell upon him. It was exactly as he feared, the principal hadn't heard his attempt at knocking after all. Not only that, but it seems his voice failed to save him from getting into trouble. Adding this on top of everything else he had on his mind, Adel found that his throat had tightened up a bit. "I-I'm sorry..." He whimpered, his eyes trailing down to the floor. Not having the courage to defend himself and try explaining that the principal was mistaken -- because Adel did in fact knock -- he said nothing more.
Noticing the shadow on the floor belonging to Turner started moving, Adel looked back up again. He saw that the principal went over to a desk to retrieve something. Once he returned, the boy seemed even more confused at what was presented to him. A paper? What was it for? "Y-yes, s-sir!" He quickly stammered in reply as he grabbed it, giving it a quick look so he could understand. Scanning each line, was this... Some sort of test? Did it have something to do with him getting a Pokémon?
Well... Whatever the reason, he just knew that he was already starting to regret coming in here. Now finding himself a pen so that he may fill out the sheet of paper and be done with this quickly, he moved to the nearest flat surface to get started. Reading each one again more carefully this time, he started writing his answers down. Between thinking a couple of them over, and occasionally glancing at Turner with a small frown on his face, Adel did his best to be quick about it. Once it was finished, he brought the paper back to the principal and handed it to him. "I'm finished..." He said rather quietly. Back when he was going through his answers for the test, he'd managed to convince himself that this did have something to do with the Pokémon he was supposed to receive. Which of course made him really nervous, as he definitely had no clue now what he might get if it really was a choice based on this test. There was also something else he wanted to mention that was very important, but he really didn't want to get yelled at again...

Spike the Lairon had been napping behind the desk, but he now woke up and looked around curiously. He smelled someone different in the room! He walked around the desk until he saw the boy. Smiling, he bounded over to him. <Hello! Who are you? Do you want to play?> Unlike his trainer, he was very friendly.
"Don't bother him," Turner said to the Pokemon in a much softer tone than before. The presence of Spike seemed to calm him down a bit. When the student was finished, he swiped the paper from him and looked over the answers. He muttered something to himself before turning around and stalking to the back of the room, taking time to neatly lay the paper down in a pile on the desk on the way. He did not take long to find three Pokeballs in a drawer and bring them back to the boy. "Choose one of these. No, you do not have any other options." He seemed impatient and slightly irritated as he released the Pokemon from their confines.

Not expecting for there to be a Pokémon already out and about, it was easy to imagine just how surprised Adel was to see a gray lumbering creature appear from behind the desk. Not in a good way either as Adel let out an audible gasp. A Pokémon! Though he couldn't seem to guess what species it was, since he'd never seen one before. Taking no notice that the Lairon was just trying to be friendly, he could only watch helplessly with a significantly more frightened whimper as it started coming right towards him. The very second the test was taken out of his hand, he wasted no time in backing away from it. "S-Stay..." He nervously tried to whisper to it as Turner went over to the desk for a moment. To make sure it didn't attempt coming any closer, and so that he didn't catch Turner's attention with telling Spike what to do. That'd probably just make him mad. "D-don't come any c-closer. Please..." Not like that would actually make it listen to him, since it had no real reason to obey, but this was the best he could come up with to avoid resorting to another alternative...
An alternative that was starting to sound more desirable once Turner returned, this time with three shiny red and white spheres on hand. This was it, the moment he'd been awaiting, and very much dreading. But the attitude of the principal was definitely not appreciated here, nor what he said had sounded reassuring at all, and he couldn't help himself as he frowned at the man again. Was he just always irritable, or did it have something do to with the knocking thing? Because he'd already apologized for that! What if Adel didn't like what he got for his choices? Did that just not matter? Unable to argue, he settled for stuffing his unhappiness down for another time, and focusing on what he came here for. "I understand..."
Adel didn't quite feel prepared for this still, but couldn't be bothered to tell Turner that anyway as he wasn't given the chance, or rather missed it completely. Swallowing hard, he watched as the same number of Pokémon emerged from those Poké Balls. Three of them, and adding in the fourth one that wasn't exactly part of this, it was a little more than he'd wanted. No going back now though, so he just needed to pick one, somehow. The first time he'd tried this a few years ago, he never chose one. So it was worrying that it might come down to that yet again a second time. Especially as he could not bring himself to get anywhere near even these Pokémon, he was practically backed against the door.
It didn't matter if Turner thought this strange, he was much more comfortable over here instead of over there with them. Having great need of keeping himself as calm as possible for this... So in silence, he started looking at the Pokémon he was supposed to choose from. First with the strange looking ice type. Despite the distance, he somehow felt chilled just from the sight of it. It seemed cold. Way too cold for him. Thus, unfortunately for the Vanillite, he had to shake his head to it. Moving onto the other two, they seemed a little more reasonable. The Dedenne was a curious one to Adel, as these weren't native to where he lived. Which meant, just like Spike, he didn't know what this one was supposed to be either, or what it even did. But it was pretty small, which could be helpful. So, maybe...? He really wasn't sure, up until he saw a what looked like the flash of sparks, his eyes widening. It was an electric type?
That one wasn't going to work. He didn't have the experience or know-how to deal with electric Pokémon. Which just left his last choice, the Minccino. That one he did recognize. From what he was aware of, these were popular back at home, because of... Something about their appearance and certain claims of some sort? His mind was drawing a blank on that one. Wonderful timing...
But it is normal. He'd thought to himself, with a tiny smile emerging on his lips, the first one since he'd gotten here. That one should work, he could handle normal, probably... And he did have no other options left anyway. Unless he were to irritate Turner even further, which he certainly didn't want to do. "I'll pick that one, the Minccino." He said as he pointed right at the fluffy creature. "And... Can you put it back in its Poké Ball? ...Please." Sadly he wasn't up for going through that important bonding process right now.

Spike was surprised by the fear he saw from Adelmar. He was not scary, was he? Sure, he looked tough, but he was very nice! He stood there stunned at the order to not come closer. No one had ever acted this way towards him before. Had he done something wrong? Saddened, he took several steps back and watched the student helplessly. This was no fun.
Turner quirked an eyebrow at the boy's decision to stay far away from the Pokemon. "I hope you're not afraid of Pokemon," he said under his breath. Otherwise this was going to be a long year. He did not have time to teach a naive boy how to interact with Pokemon. He would entrust his teachers and classmates to that task. He let out a sigh when the student finally made a choice. "The cute, fluffy one. Of course." He paused at the student's request. Yes, this was a strange one. He hoped he would not have to deal with him in the future.
His eyes tightened, but he did return the Mincinno to its Pokeball. "Fine. But you must take this." He held out his arm with the Pokeball in it and waited for him to come closer. He proceeded to return the other two Pokemon to their own Pokeballs. He then stalked back to the far end of the room and dropped them off in the drawer. Finally, he grabbed a backpack and trudged back to the boy. "Here." He shoved the pack into his hands. "This has everything you need. Now be gone." He had more important work to return to.
<Good luck,> Spike whispered as he watched the boy leave. When poor Spike had actually listened to him, and gave Adel a bit of space, he felt relieved. And was also quite surprised. It listened to me? That was the only thought that really occurred to him as he watched Spike move away. Thankfully it at least removed a bit of the pressure that he was feeling from being around four Pokémon at once. As long as Spike stayed put over there at the desk, then things would be fine. But as he looked at the Lairon, he was starting to wonder something... Was he imagining it, or did that Pokémon seem sad? That had struck him as odd. Biting his lip, he tried not to make further eye contact with it for now.
A brow rose up as Adel heard Turner's comment about his choice. Cute, and fluffy? What did that have to do with anything? Adel wasn't really seeing it as something 'cute'. Though he couldn't argue about the fluffiness, since it did have a lot of fur. Still, with the way he had said it, did the principal know he would make that choice? Something about it made it seem like it was obvious to pick Minccino, but he wasn't sure.
Adel was beginning to feel even more better once Turner accepted his request, and one less Pokémon was out and about. ”Yes. Thank you.” Although not quite comfortable with the other two still being out, he did do as he was told. Coming closer, and giving the Dedenne and Vanillite wary looks up until they too had been returned, his hand went to reach for Minccino’s Poké Ball.
Except… For the strangest reason, he couldn’t grab it.
Instead his hand was just hovering a few inches away from it. Something seemed to be making him hesitate with this. ”Umm…” He looked up at Turner awkwardly, then back to the Poké Ball. Come ooon… He needed to encourage himself to just grab it already. It’s just a ball, with a Pokémon… Inside it... Okay, not helping. But what could he do? He was already so close! He couldn't waste more time here, he was aware of that.
But it ended up taking a solid minute for him to build up the nerve to finally take the ball into his hand. When he'd accomplished it, he let out a sudden breath, and took this moment to just stare at it. This was his Pokémon now... Being held in a ball, sure, but still. It nearly felt more like a dream than reality. Which was kind of scary when he reminded himself that this was indeed real. Just about as frightening as knowing that with one simple action, that very real Pokémon could come out at any moment.
His moment was then interrupted by Turner saying something. Adel had looked up with a bit of a confused look on his face, until something was given to him suddenly. There was even a small ”oof!" from him as he received the pack with just a bit more force than expected. Glancing down at what he was given, he kind of wanted to see what was in it. But he supposed that was going to have to wait... With just a nod, Adel turned to leave immediately. Only lingering for another moment to stare at Spike, before closing the door to the office behind himself and heading to the next thing that needed to be done. Having taken notice of how the Lairon was watching him.
