Makoto is a vegetarian and a great cook. He also knows how to play the guitar. Makoto has rough knowledge of martial arts and is very swift. He is ambidextrous. He likes: cat pokemon, cars, leather jackets, and sweet food. He dislikes: rodent pokemon, berries, bald heads, and hats.
He has trained in martial arts for all his life, and is a very level belt. Makoto will not use this unless in self-defense.

That region was very different, inhabited by monks. So, in saying, Makoto is a monk. In his region, people do not command pokemon, by fight along side them. The historians of the region said it was part of their tradition for a balanced pair of physical prowess and mental acuity. In this tradition people and pokemon dueled for control of each of the provinces in the region. This region is very new to the types of techonology in the other regions of the pokemon world, and stays in a state of fear of electric devices.
Makoto was born in a very low class family; it was just him and his widowed mother. His mother, Haruka, grew tired of this lifestyle and decided to take her child, a very young Makoto to live in the Unova Region, hoping for a better life. However, with knowledge of how different the region was, she took her boy to the rural Aspertia City. Now completely out of money and new to the culture, Haruka got a job at the nearby pokemon center as a clerk at the pokemart. Makoto went the first years of his life repetitively, and without an education.
