Paul entered the gym, prepared for his first battle with a battle leader. The first one was named Jenna. He had heard she specialized in bug Pokemon, so he had planned and trained accordingly. After some intense training, he had gotten three of his Pokemon up to the right level of strength to take on the battle leader. He expected them to win this battle. "Jenna, I challenge you to a battle!" he called out when he did not see her. He was eager to get started. Battling her was necessary for him to graduate, but it was also a very useful way to get stronger. He looked forward to seeing how much his Pokemon would level up in power by the end of this.

A minute later, Jenna entered the room. "I am here," she said as she stepped closer. She stopped when she reached the battlefield. "What is your name, challenger?" She looked him over, sizing him up. He seemed to be very serious. It was probably best to get right down to business. "This will be a three-on-three battle, and you may substitute at any time. Meet my first Pokemon." She revealed a Pokeball, and out came a Butterfree. "You're up, Sparkles." She could not wait to begin.

Paul got into position when the battle leader appeared. "I'm Paul," he said. He nodded to what she said, glad they were getting started right away. Once he saw her first Pokemon, he knew just who he would use. "Private, stand by for battle!" His Farfetch'd appeared in a stance that showed he was ready for battle. He could fly, so getting at the Butterfree in the air would be no problem. In addition, his flying moves would be strong against her. "Use Peck!" He would start out with that and see what happened. Battle leaders were supposed to be strong and hard to beat, so he anticipated needing to think quickly.
Private looked up at his opponent. He narrowed his eyes in concentration as he focused on what he needed to do. He was going to battle, and he was going to win. He and his trainer had trained long and hard for this. <Prepare to be defeated!> he cried as he took flight and aimed his sharp beak at her.

Jenna nodded when the challenger said his name. She was pleased with the way he conducted himself already. He was bound to be tough to beat, which she liked. She hoped to be able to teach him something as well. She loved it when challengers left with more than just a victory or defeat. She found the Farfetch'd to be a good choice. Paul would not have to worry about being able to hit her Butterfree. She could still dodge, though. "Sparkles, dodge and use Confusion!" She did not make these battles easy for anyone.
Sparkles stared at the Farfetch's when he spoke to her. <I don't think so,> she said. She was not much for trash talk. She preferred to let her actions speak for themselves. When he came at her, she ducked down low to get out of the way. Then she turned her body back toward him and let out strange waved to harm him.

Paul was not surprised when the Butterfree was able to dodge the attack. "Dodge it!" He watched as his Farfetch'd flew up and out of the way of the Confusion attack. He had never battled where both he and his opponent had a flying type. Battling solely in the air would prove interesting. "Use Sand Attack and Poison Jab!" The Sand Attack would ideally allow Private the chance to get in his Poison Jab. If the Butterfree became poisoned, that would be great, but he was not betting on it. He was planning on relying on his Pokemon's strong flying attacks since they would have a great effect on the bug type.
Private did not like that the Butterfree dodged his attack. He would be sure to get her next time! He turned around as quick as he could in order to see what was coming next. When weird waves started moving towards him, he flew upwards and out of the way. He was glad they were in flight; it made moving quickly a lot easier. Once he heard his trainer, he flew towards the Butterfree again, this time his beak covered in poison.

Jenna was impressed with the Farfetch'd's speed and Paul's quick thinking. This was going to be fun. She always enjoyed a good air battle."Fly up high!" she ordered when she saw the Sand Attack coming. While that attack would be relatively easy to dodge, a physical attack by the flying type was a more difficult challenge. She was still going to try, though. "Dodge and use Poisonpowder!" If there was a chance Sparkles was going to be poisoned, she wanted to make it even.
Sparkles was disappointed that her Confusion missed, but she knew she would it him next time. He could not evade her forever! She flew up high in the air, missing the sand that came flying at her. She then tried to locate the Farfetch'd. Unfortunately, the sand obscured her vision. She tried to fly away as soon as she saw him, but she did endure most of the attack. A second later, she was fluttering dust onto the Farfetch'd while it remained close.

The Butterfree did not appear to be poisoned. That was fine. Poison was sprayed at Private, but he did not seem to be poisoned or harmed at all by it. It was time to move on to implementing his plan with his Farfetch'd. He had a finishing move that they had been training hard to use, and he knew it would work well. The hard part was getting the Butterfree on the ground. "Use Aeriel Ace!" He was confident this move would hit; no Pokemon could avoid an attack with the speed of this one. It was a flying move, so he was very interested in seeing how much damage the Butterfree would sustain.
Private tried to swipe away the dust when it was blown on him, but it was no use. It did not hurt, though, which was odd. He thought it was supposed to poison him, but it didn't. Well, that was only fair. He was pleased to hear his trainer call out Aerial Ace. It was a delightful move. He flew away from the Butterfree in order to give him enough space to perform the move. When he was far enough away, he swerved around without stopping and suddenly burst forward at great speed. He came to a sudden stop right in front of her and slashed with his leek.

Jenna was surprised that the Farfetch'd was not poisoned. That did not happen often, but there was always a chance of it. Of course, probability was now in their favor, and the next attack like that would likely be effective. She would save that for later, though. After watching her Butterfree hit by an almost unavoidable attack, she knew she needed to get some damage in herself. "Sparkles, turn and use Confusion!" She hoped the Farfetch'd would not have enough time to get out of the way this time.
Sparkles waited for signs of poisoning, but none came. Oh well. She would get him next time. She had heard of Ariel Ace, but she had little experience with the attack. She tried to fly out of the way, but it was to no avail. She held in a cry as she was struck. That hurt a lot! She had no time to think of her pain, however. She turned and immediately shot out a wave of Confusion. She desperately needed this one to strike.

Paul was satisfied to see the damage taken by Ariel Ace. There was another flying move he wanted to use, but it would also cause serious damage to Private as well. It was a strong move that would be very helpful. He would have to plan his moves carefully and use that move at the best possible moment. For now, he needed to do something else. "Dodge!" Private was not able to dodge the Confusion in time. After his Farfetch'd got hit, Paul said, "Use Leer and Peck!" He did not appear to have become confused at all by the Butterfree's attack, which was good.
Private was glad he was able to strike his opponent with such speed. It felt good. After colliding with her, he slowed to a stop and turned around. However, he was not quick enough to move out of the way of that weird wave. He winced as it struck him and caused him pain. It passed by pretty quickly, though. When he heard his trainer's words, he cast the Butterfree and strong Leer. After a moment of that, he sped forward, aiming his beak for a powerful Peck.

Jenna was enjyoing the air battle so far. Usually her Pokemon was at a disadvantage to flying Pokemon because she specilized in bug types, but she still found it fun. she winced when she saw that Peck attack hit straight on. She had to do something to stop that Farfetch'd. "Sparkles, use Sleep Powder!"
Sparkles tried to fly away from her opponent. Unfortunately, the Farfetch'd was too quick for her. She cried out as she started to fall to the ground. With the other Pokemon now above her, she flapped her wings and whisped dust up to him before reversing course and flying back into the air.
