Another attack had hit. Gary could tell that the Pokemon ere wearing down at about the same pace. He immediately became suspicious when Paul did not order his Patrat to use a damaging attack. Was he planning on using Bide again? He took a moment to think about how to handle this situation. Avoiding using a damaging attack himself could result in the Patrat continuously using Leer until eventually any attack could knock out Skipper. On the other hand, the Squirtle would be able to endure one more Bide attack if they let it come as quickly as possible. Plus, is Torrent ability would then be activated. It was decided. "Bubble, now!"
Skipper loved his water gun attack. He was pleased when he was able to get in another hit. This was fun! He was startled by the sand that soon hit him. That was not fun. He wished the rodent would stop using that attack. He brushed away the sand just in time to notice the Leer. Ok then. No physical attack this time? He used the pause in the battle to catch his breath and zero in on the Patrat. Once he had her in his sights and he received his order, he sent a stream of bubbles her way.

Gary had probably caught onto what Paul was doing this time, but there was really nothing he could do to keep his plan hidden a second time. Besides, strategy was not the only thing necessary to win battles. Strength played a key role. He refrained from telling his Patrat anything. She could take the Bubble. When it was over, he said, "Use Bide!" It would probably take more to defeat the Squirtle, but Bide got more risky the farther the battle went. Later, he would test the Patrat's limits on that.
Rose waited to be told to dodge, but she heard nothing from her trainer. He was probably going to tell her to use Bide again. That was fine with her; it was her strongest move. She took the full force of the Bubble, this time falling from the impact. She gracefully got back on her feet and ran forward, following her trainer's command. Gary had seen the Bide coming, but he figured it was best to get it over with. He would not be able to survive another one, though. He was just going to have to make sure that his own attacks were strong enough to knock out the Patrat before she could use it again. Luckily, his Squirtle's Torrent ability had been activated, which would increase the power of his water attacks by 50%. "Skipper, Tail Whip and Water Gun!" This better not miss...
Skipper's shell wobbled as the Bide attack hit. Thankfully, he still had enough energy to crawl out. Plus, he could feel the power of water flowing through him. He stayed on all fours and wagged his tail back and forth. Then he hopped to his feet and aimed his Water Gun at the Patrat. He could tell this battle was coming to a close, and he was determined to not let his trainer down.

This battle appeared to be ending pretty soon. Paul noticed how the power of the Squirtle's water attacks had increased because of his Torrent ability. With that on top of Tail Whip, the end result could prove fatal (in a battle sense). Having no other choice, he said, "Detect!" He had kept from using this move since the beginning of the battle, so it would work. "Use Leer and Bite at the same time." He was not sure if this would end it. It probably wouldn't, not with that shell protecting him. He would push the Patrat as much as was necessary, whatever happened.
Rose felt good after that attack. It made her fell strong and powerful. Even though the Squirtle hid in his shell, she still had a strong effect on him. She braced herself for what was to come. Hearing her trainer, she put her hands up, palms facing the Water Gun. Using Detect, something like a force field blocked the water completely. Nothing had touched her. She gave her opponent a fierce, piercing Leer as she ran forward, preparing to bite.

There was a mysterious gleam in Gary's eyes as the Patrat used Detect. He had been hoping Paul would use that move. He had been saving Skipper's most powerful water move for last. It was an egg move and not a normal move, so it was unlikely his opponent could see it coming. Combined with the previous Tail Whip and the unlikelihood of Detect working again, having this attack hit was his best chance of winning. "Withdraw!" Luckily, the Squirtle was still standing. His plan had been risky, but it would be worth it if it worked. "Now use Muddy Water!" He knew the battle was going to come down to this, and he waited to see what would happen with baited breath.
Skipper was frustrated that his Water Gun attack was blocked by Detect. And that was going to be a good one too! He hated it when his plans were thwarted. He remained calm, though, as the battle progressed. He quickly withdrew inside his shell when the Patrat's attack hit him. He knew he was down to his very last ounce of energy now. If his own attack did not work now, he knew it was not likely he would be able to keep standing. However, he grew excited upon hearing his next command. He had been waiting for that attack! He quickly popped out of his shell and then, staying low to the ground, he swiped muddy water at the Patrat who he thought would still be close to him.

The Squirtle was still standing. He could see that Gary was happy about that and whatever he had planned. Muddy Water? Paul knew he only had a split second to decide how to act. He could attempt to dodge the attack, but it was not likely to work, given the decreased energy in his Patrat from the damage she had been taking. Even if she could dodge it partially, it was a powerful move combined with Tail Whip and the Squirtle's Torrent ability. "Detect!" There was a 50% chance of Detect working a second time in a row. That was not a very reassuring chance, but it was his only option. If it did not work, then his Patrat would feint, and the battle would be over. He waited calmly to see what would happen.
Rose wished the Squirtle would faint. She had used her powerful Bide twice now, but he still stood. She watched warily as he was preparing for another attack. How strong would that be? From what she had seen, it would probably be a great move. She wanted to become stronger too. Detect? It was definitely a strong move if her trainer did not think she could handle even a little part of it and was therefore risking Detect not working. As quickly as she could, she put her hands up again, hoping for a shield to form like before. Everything seemed to go in slow motion, and she held her breath as she waited. Nothing happened. A split second later, she was struck by Muddy Water. She tried to hold on, but she quickly fell unconscious.

Principal Sash found this battle to be very exciting as well. She thought it could go either way since both trainers appeared evenly matched. She was pleased to see that their ranking system was working so well for the tournament. This truly was great competition! When the Patrat fainted, she let out a breath she did not realize she had been holding and walked onto the field with her microphone. "Rose is unable to battle!" she announced. "Skipper is the winner, and victory goes to Gary from Kanto! He will be facing Sawyer in the final round. Don't miss it, folks. It's sure to be a thriller." Wow, what a day! Skipper has gained three levels. He now knows Bite. He may now evolve!
Rose has gained one level! OOC: Good. That's the best way to do it fairly. We should put it int he rules so others know about it. Btw, Gary vs. Paul is awesome.

Paul watched as Detect failed and his Patrat was attacked for the last time before she fainted. The battle was over. He had lost. The loss did not bother him too much, for he recognized the worthiness of the battle. It had been close. Rose had gained valuable strength from it as well. He still had a lot of work to do with her, but this battle had been a good starting point. After Principal Sash announced the winner, he returned the Patrat back to her Pokeball and put it away without a word. He looked up at Gary. He nodded to him with a look that showed he approved; no words were needed. He was a worthy opponent, and he did wish to battle him again. For now, he had some training to do. He turned around and headed away from the battle area, planning to do just that. OOC: If only it had worked... Good idea. Yes, it is.

Gary held his breath as he waited to see whether Detect would work or not. If it did not, the Patrat's next attack would likely take out Skipper despite Withdraw. He let out a breath of relief when Detect failed and the attack hit at full force. It was too much for the normal type to take, and she fainted. It took a second for Gary to realize that the has won. Then a wide grin spread across his face and he called out to his Squirtle, "We did it, Skipper!" The water type turned and ran towards his trainer, both of them happily laughing as he jumped into his arms. "I'm proud of you." That had been an amazing battle. He set the Pokemon down and then stood up to look over at Paul. He nodded at him in return. They had both earned each other's respect; they were worthy rivals. It would be interesting to battle him again sometime. He glanced down at Skipper to return him to his Pokeball, but he was surprised to see him glowing! OOC: Skipper is evolving!

A bright light consumed Skipper. When the light faded, a Wartortle stood in his place. He had evolved! [img alt=" " src="http://www.pokestadium.com/assets/img/sprites/main-series/5/black-white/8.png" style="max-width:100%;"]

Gary grinned at the Wartortle that now stood before him. "Awesome, Skipper! You evolved!" Skipper grinned right back up at him. "We're going to need to get some special training in now. Come on." The two of them turned and walked away from the Battle Area, both of them very excited. The final round of the tournament was coming up, and they were determined to win it!
