OOC: This thread is for Gary and Paul's battle, and it occurs second in roleplay time. Gary should post first. He also has the first move. IC: A short break followed the first battle. When the time was up, Principal Sash strolled onto the battle field with microphone in hand and Vulpix by her side. "Thanks for waiting, folks," she said. "To find out the other side of the matchup for the championship, we have Gary from Kanto and Paul from Sinnoh!" She smiled as everyone clapped for the trainers. This was going to be fun. She trotted back to her seat with Maya to watch the action.

Gary strode onto the battlefield with confidence. He had trained hard the previous semester, and it was great to see his accomplishments recognized. He intended to win the tournament for himself and his team. He was battling Paul, that annoying guy from some of his classes. The last time they battled, it had not been a fair match. This time, they would be on equal footing, and he would win. After he was trough with him, that guy would never looked own on hm again. he decided to use the same Pokemon he had used in his last battle with Paul. "Come on out, Skipper." The Squirtle that appeared seemed just as confident as his trainer. They were ready for this. Victory would be theirs.

Paul walked onto the field much like before. Having won in the Wildcard round, he was now battling in the Semifinals. As he took his place, he took in his opponent. Gary. He had left very little impression on him from their last and only battle. It was true that Thorn had been a lot stronger than Gary's Squirtle, but that was the point. Paul was stronger than him. The fact that he had a bye did not show that Gary had gotten any stronger; he had simply worked harder to get more points to earn that privilege. Still, he supposed he had gotten stronger. That is, he hoped he had. Otherwise, this battle would prove boring and a waste of time. Now at his place, Paul looked at the Squirtle. Just like last time. He wasn't going to use Thorn again, though. No, he had another Pokemon that needed training. "Rose, stand by for battle!" He tossed a Pokeball, and his Patrat appeared in front of him.

Gary's eyes narrowed ever so slightly when Paul approached the field. It was not just losing to him in the past that bothered him; he just got a bad vibe from this guy. There was something he did not like about him. Instead of analyzing what tat could be, he decided to act by winning this battle. He had a new Strategy with Skipper. He recently realized they had been neglecting their defense, which he should not be doing when Squirtle had an awesome turtle shell to hide in. After some training, they were ready for anything. "Skipper, use Water Gun!" He had no time for formalities. It was time to get down to business.
Skipper was surprised to see that they were battling Paul. He was still mad about that last battle as well, but now was his chance for revenge. The Patrat did not look too intimidating. Since they were on the same level, he could so beat her. No one would laugh at him again! As soon as his trainer gave the word, he sent a powerful stream of water right at his opponent, hoping to knock her off her feet or at least do some good damage.

Paul was glad Gary attacked right away. He wanted to begin the battle as soon as possible as well; talking before was just pointless. "Use Detect and Tackle!" he said as quickly as he could. It was time to see how well this Patrat battled. He had done a little training with her, though not as much as his other Pokemon since he just recently received her. Duke had given her to him. It was part of his second mission. He had to train her enough until she evolved. Once she evolved, he would battle with her against Duke. Depending on how that battle went would determine if he passed or not. Paul thought battling with her here would be a good opportunity to make her stronger.
Rose lifted her hands, and a white circle of light formed. When the water hit, it simply splashed off the light. Her new trainer had told her beforehand that she would be battling in order to get stronger. That seemed like a good enough reason to her, so she complied. As soon as the Water Gun was finished, she ran towards the Squirtle for a Tackle.

Gary remained calm and collected as he watched the battle begin. he knew better than to let emotions cloud his judgment. He always acted slowly and deliberately. The Detect attack did not bother him. If they kept using it, it was bound to fail eventually. Besides, Skipper had tricks of his own. "Careful. Wait... Now dodge!" He was pleased when his Squirtle was able to do just as he said. "Now Bubble!" He hoped he would be right on target.
Skipper was frustrated that the Patrat used a slick move to avoid his attack. Well, that could not work forever. He stayed still as the Pokemon came running towards him. His listened carefully just like he and Gary trained. When he heard the word, he leapt to the side, barely missing the attack. he immediately spun around and shot Bubbles at the Patrat before it could know what was going on.

Since Detect would have more of a chance of failing if it was used consecutively, Paul refrained from using it again. It would be useful some other time. "Dodge it!" Unfortunately, by the time the Patrat had turned around and noticed the bubbles, she had been struck. Ideally, she could still move out of the way, but she seemed to need some training in that. "Use Sand Attack and run on all fours to use Bite!" The Sand Attack would aid in keeping the Squirtle from dodging as well as decreasing his accuracy.
Rose stopped when she did not hit the turtle. She twirled around to see where he went and was hit by bubbles. She heard her trainer tell her to dodge, but she was so shocked by the attack that she could not. After the attack was over, she ran gracefully forward and suddenly stopped in order to send sand flying at the Squirtle. She got down on all fours and ran quickly through the sand and towards him, ready to bite. She felt herself being a little slower, but the sand would help her with that as well as how she was running with all four legs.

Gary was satisfied that an attack had hit this time. Bubble would also make the Patrat slower, which was helpful. That Sand Attack, though, seemed to be working in her favor. Rather than risk not being able to dodge, he decided to go a different route. "Withdraw!" The Squirtle's shell could protect him from many attacks, but some got through better than others. "Now use Water Gun!" He figured it would be easier to get a hit in now that the Patrat was close. He also did not want to have to worry as much about his lowered accuracy due to Sand Attack.
Skipper smirked in satisfaction. His bubbles had work! And they had been so much fun. The sand flying in his face, however, was not fun. She shielded his eyes with his arm to try to minimize the damage. Instead of trying to find the Patrat after the attack, he trusted his trainer and withdrew inside his shell. He felt something thumb against him, but the damage was not much. He used his senses to tell where his opponent was, and then he sprang out of his shell and used Water Gun.

That Withdraw was useful for his opponent. Paul often used that move with Thorn in battles. He could see that he would have to take that into consideration when planning his moves. He would need to be quicker than his opponent so that he did not have time to go into his shell. He also needed a more powerful attack in case he did withdraw into it again. Gary's next words gave him an idea. It would be difficult for his Patrat to dodge, so he did not bother attempting it, not when he could use the attack to his advantage. "Use Leer!" he said once the water was gone.
Rose inwardly growled when her jaws clamped down on a shell instead of the turtle's soft skin. That was no fun. She released him and stood up straight. Her eyes immediately closed when water sprayed in her face. She felt herself be pushed back, and soon she fell down on her back. As soon as it was over, she stood back up and faced her opponent. She sent him a piercing Leer for attacking her.

Gary wondered what Paul was up to. He was not the best at reading other trainers, preferring to focus on his own strategy. Leer may have lowered Skipper's defense, but it as nothing he could not handle. "Use Bubble!" That would slow the Patrat down and lower her speed. He wondered when they were going to use Detect again. If both sides kept their defenses up, this was going to be a long battle.
Skipper smirked at the frustration of the Patrat. He seemed to have the upper hand for now. The Leer made him falter, and he shivered involuntarily. This would not stop him from attacking, though. He stood his ground and released a stream of bubbles at the other Pokemon. When he was finished, he waited warily for a counter-attack.

Paul smirked when Gary told his Squirtle to use Bubble. He risked slowing down Rose, but the benefits of her fully taking the attack outweighed that risk. When she turned to look at him, waiting for a command, he said, "Stand still." In order for the next attack to work the best, she needed to receive as much damage as possible. The move was not too common, so not many people realized which Pokemon knew the move, which benefited the one using it. After the bubbles ceased, he said, "Use Bide!" Thanks to those attacks his Patrat endured, she would now be able to give the Squirtle twice that. Even if he hid in his shell, the Leer would at least do something to help counter that. Plus, a good amount of damage should still be given out.
Rose heard her opponent's trainer call out a move. She waited for hers to tell her to dodge, but he did not. She glanced back and looked at him questioningly. Stand still? She turned back to face the Squirtle and his bubbles. She could take it; it was necessary if you wanted to battle well. Right before they struck her, she wondered if her trainer was thinking about her Bide move. The bubbles hurt, but she stood standing and did not cry out or complain. When they were done, she prepared herself for a counterattack. Yes, it was Bide. Power began to build up inside her, and she ran forward as fast as she could, aiming at the Squirtle. He was going to take out what he dished out.

Gary did not understand why Paul was not attacking. He had to have something up his sleeve. He was taken back by the call to use Bide. He had completely forgotten that Patrat knew Bide. He should have been mroe careful. "Quick, Withdraw!" The attack would still do a lot of damage but not enough to knock them out of the battle yet. "Now use Tackle!" With the Patrat slowed down, the attack would be more likely to hit. He tried to remain calm so he could think clearly. This battle had just gotten interesting.
Skipper eyed the Patrat suspicously. Why had her trainer told her to stand still? Something was up here. He warily waited for whatever was to come. Then he saw the Patrat start to use Bide. Uh oh. He knew what that attack was about. It could be pretty nasty. He crawled inside his shell to minimize the damage. Still, the attack hurt as he endured at least two-thirds of it. He felt a bit wobbly as he came back out, but he quickly regained his ground. He glared at the Patrat as he ran forward to Tackle her. She would pay for this!

Paul was satisfied with the amount of damage that the Bide seemed to do, despite the Squirtle withdrawing into his shell. The battle was not over yet, though. He kept his mind concentrated on his next plan of action. "Use Sand Attack and dodge! Then use Tackle!" Ideally, the Sand Attack would aid in dodging the attack as well as succeeding in the Tackle. This Patrat seemed competent enough; if she really was, then this would go well.
Rose grew happy when she had successfully used Bide. The turtle had withdrawn again, but his shell was still no match! She could already feel herself getting stronger. At her trainer's command, she kicked up sand right before running to the side, barely missing the Tackle. Thankfully, the Bubble had not slowed her down even more like the first time, so she still had some speed left to dodge. Without stopping, she turned and ran right at the Squirtle again, hoping to land her Tackle.

Another Sand Attack? Gary was getting tired of this. If Skipper got sand in his eyes again, that might make it hard for him to dodge. He chose to go the same route. "Withdraw!" He knew he had to think of something fast if he wanted to win this. Withdraw was helping, but the Patrat's attacks were still slowly wearing down the Squirtle. He decided to go with their most successful attack so far. "Water Gun!" He willed himself to be calm as he waited to see what would happen.
Skipper was frustrated that his Tackle missed again. What would it take to hit this pesky rodent? He shielded his eyes as sand was flung in his face, but he was not able to block all of hit. He hated that attack. Instead of attempting to locate his opponent in order to dodge the next attack, he withdrew inside his shell again. He loved his shell; he did not know what he would do without it. He felt his shell move back from the Tackle, but he did not receive too much damage. He then popped out and blew water in the direction of the Patrat.

Paul watched calmly as the two Pokemon battled. Each Pokemon seemed to be slowly losing their energy, but they were also still able and ready to continue on. Of course, Gary had the Squirtle hid in his shell again. There were ways of getting around that if a Pokemon knew a non-contact move, but that was for another battle since Rose only knew contact moves. Thinking about his moves for the future, Paul concluded he would need to make sure the Squirtle was not in a position to dodge. "Use Sand Attack!" he said as water came towards his Patrat. She got struck by it, but it gave the Squirtle little chance of escaping the sand unless he abruptly stopped his attack. "Now Leer."
Rose was pleased her Tackle worked. She felt like she could win this battle and become stronger because of it. When water was being shot at her again, she obeyed her trainer and brushed up sand with her feet, aiming it towards her opponent. Take that! she thought. Very quickly after, she was blown back by the impact of the Water Gun. Still standing, she shot the Squirtle a Leer.
