Faith's heart bounded as she entered the gym. It had taken a lot of self-talk to get her here. Her mother had never told her to not challenge the battle leaders, but she knew it would have been discouraged if she knew she was thinking about it. What got her here was the knowledge that Pokemon wanted to battle. She was doing this for them. She gathered all her courage and spoke in a loud voice: "I am here to challenge you, Jenna!" |

Jenna smiled as she entered the room. "Welcome!" she boomed. "I would be happy to accept your challenge. Let's get started!" She took her place on one side of the battlefield and then chose a Pokeball. "My first Pokemon will be Sting! You may have the first move." The Beedrill stared at Faith menacingly. Faith gave Jenna a small smile. Well, she was here, so it was time to focus. She already knew which Pokemon she would choose and in which order. "Nutella, come on out!" The Pachirisu had begun to listen to her more since she realized it was to her advantage.
"Start off with Quick Attack!"
Upon exiting from her Pokeball, Nutella stretched her body. Another battle? At least her opponent looked interesting. She decided she would stick wit her trainer's commands for now. She got into fighting position and then sped off for a Quick Attack, leaping in the air at the last second. Jenna thought that the challenger had chosen her Pokemon well. Of course, type advantage did not mean she would automatically win. "Sting, use Fury Attack!"
Sting started to fly up, but the Pachirisu was still able to leap at him and strike. He took a moment to recover and then swooped down to perform his Fury Attack. Faith examined the bug Pokemon and his moves. She had an idea about how to proceed. "Stay there, Nutella, and use Charm!" She hoped she would trust her judgment.
Nutella braced herself for the oncoming attack. She hated to admit it, but she had the idea to use Bide as well. The Beedrill knocked her over, but she quickly hoped back to her feet. Then she tried to make herself look cute as she used Charm. Jenna wondered what the challenger was up to. For now, she decided to focus on her own moves. "Good work, Sting. Use Fury Attack again!"

Faith held her breath. They were so close now. Her Pachrisu just had to hold on a little bit longer. Finally, it was time. "Now Bide!"
Nutella endured another round of Fury Attack. Gritting her teeth, she prepared for her next move. She faced her opponent and released all of her pent up energy. Jenna looked on in surprise as the powerful attack struck her bug type. "Not bad at all! Let's hit them back hard, Sting! Fury Attack!"
Sting was blown back by the Pachirisu's move. He nearly fell to the ground but regained his balance. Glaring at his opponent, he swooped in low to strike back. Faith smiled. "Great job, Nutella!" She was glad the Pachirisu listened to her even if she did not fully trust her yet. "Now Quick Attack!"
Nutella smirked at the Beedrill. <Didn't see that coming, did you?> She swished her tail and moved back. Time to finish this up. She zipped forward, quickly moving back and forth. "Fury Attack!" Jenna called. This was getting down to the wire, and it was only the first round! She enjoyed challengers who made her react quickly.
