The Deerling tilted his head slightly to the side, curious. This human wasn't attacking him like everyone in the herd said he would. He looked in surprise at the Squirtle. They were both saying 'hi' to him. <Hello,> he said quietly, glancing at both of them. Enough with this fear! He refused to be subject to biological tendencies. He was here to explore on his own and experience a human. Shaking off the tremors of fear that had naturally coursed through him, he held his head a little higher and bravely took a step closer. <I'm doing great. This is my first time away from the herd,> he said, feeling proud. So far, so good. What were all those other Deerlings talking about? <I bet that's fun,> Skipper said, smiling at the Deerling. He liked the attitude of this Pokemon. He seemed pretty nice, and he was not afraid of them. He also had to be bold and curious to step away from his heard like that. The Squirtle wondered if he would enjoy traveling around with a trainer. <I'm Skipper, and this is my trainer, Gary. We trying to become strong at battling. It's kind of awesome.>
Gary did not say anything as he watched the two Pokemon interact. He hoped Skipper would at least be able to engage the Deerling in a battle. He did not want to feel like he betrayed its trust by first acting friendly. This one had to be adventurous if he was out on his own, so he figured he had a good shot.

The Deerling smiled. This Squirtle sure was nice. That made him feel a little more comfortable. Knowing their names made them even less scarier. He wondered if he would ever have a name. His ears perked up at the sound of battling, for he had never heard much about it. He had heard of it before, but the herd never partook in it; they simply ran away from any possible danger. <Battling?> he asked, his head tilted again. <What do you have to do?> If it was fun, he wanted to hear more about it. From the little he had heard from the herd, it was scary and undesirable because it was dangerous. Why? He hadn't a clue. They also said humans were scary and needed to be avoided, which did not seem to be the case here, so he wasn't so sure they were correct about battling either.

Skipper was surprised that the Deerling did not know what battling was. Surely he had to have battled at some point in his life. Maybe he had but he had not realized what he was doing. Interesting. He must have been sheltered by the culture of his heard. Well, the Squirtle could help with that! <Battle is where Pokemon take turns sing their moves on each other until one of them gives up or can't battle anymore. It's a way to get stronger, and it's fun. It feels good to beat a tough opponent.> He wondered if he would like to give it a try. He was itching to test out the move he had just learned.

The Deerling became even more interested as Skipper spoke. If he could battle, then he didn't have to run away scared anymore! Then maybe he could survive longer away from the herd. Facing a tough opponent did seem scary, but he didn't want to be afraid. Besides, if he could leave the herd and approach this human and Pokemon, then he could do anything, right? He could totally handle it. <Can I try it?> he asked the Squirtle. If it was fun like he said, he wanted to try it out. It was always great to try new things. Skipper grew excited when the Deerling asked to try out battling. <Of course!> He said. It would be good for the Deerling to test it and see if he liked it. If he did, maybe he could join them to help them achieve their goals. The Squirtle looked back at Gary and gave him a thumbs up. <He wants to battle.>
Gary understood what his Pokemon was trying to say. He smiled and nodded at him. "You want to battle?" he said to the Deerling. "Good luck." He wondered if he had any experience. That was something he could always work on. He seemed friendly enough. The trainer returned his attention to his own Pokemon. "Ok, Skipper, let's start off with Bubble." It would not do much because the Deerling was a part grass type and Bubble was a water move, but he decided to start off easy.
<I just learned this one,> Skipper said, smiling at the Deerling. Then he took a battle stance. <Ready?> This was going to be fun. He opened his mouth, and a stream of bubbles jetted out towards his opponent.

The Deerling smiled and nodded at the trainer. <I'm ready.> He watched Skipper carefully as he opened his mouth, releasing bubbles. They didn't look very harmful, they were just water, but he tried to get out of the way anyways. There were too many bubbles and they were coming too fast, though, so he couldn't avoid them. They didn't hurt too bad, though, so he just shook it off. <Those were cool,> he told the Squirtle. Now, it was his turn, right? He only had one attack, so he didn't have much of a choice. He ran towards Skipper, planning to tackle him.

Bubble seemed to work accurately, though it did not do much damage. Gary would keep that in mind. He saw the Deerling running forward for what looked like a Tackle. "Skipper, dodge it and then use Tackle too." Hopefully this would work a little better. He wondered how much speed the Deerling possessed.
Skipper was excited when his Bubble worked. That had been fun. <Thanks,> He said to the Deerling. He was quick to get out of the way of the Tackle. <Nice try.> then he spun around to find his opponent again. He raced forward to try to hit him with his own Tackle. He wondered if he would make it.

The Deerling frowned slightly when Skipper dodged his attack. He hoped he would be able to get him next time. When he came running at him, instinct brought him inspiration, and he ran a quick, short distance forward too before skidding against the road, sending sand in the Squirtle's face. Then, he dashed away, out of reach of the Tackle. That was a move all of the Deerlings in his herd knew. They used it whenever something was attacking them. With the sand in their eyes, they missed their mark, and then the Deerling was gone. Without stopping, he ran back towards Skipper for another try at a Tackle. The Deerling was kind of impressive. Gary could see how that move could be useful in battle. He would have to remember that. For now, though, he had to win so that he could catch it. It was too bad that Skipper had been hit, but this was far from over. "Alright, use Muddy Water!" Even though it was a water type move, it was pretty powerful, and it had the potential to lower their opponent's accuracy.
Skipper looked around when the Deerling disappeared. A second later, there was sand in his eyes. He could not see, so he could not avoid the Tackle that came his away. He fell over on the back of his shell. <Not bad,> he said as he hopped back up on his feet. This was getting interesting. <Now watch this.> He shot out muddy water straight at his target.

The Deerling felt happy when he was able to tackle Skipper. <Thanks!> he said, raising his head a little higher out of pride of what he had done. Muddy water was soon splashing in his face, causing him to stumble backwards and close his eyes. <Ah!> That was not fun. It was kind of cool how it was muddy, though. Now, he was having a little trouble seeing. He still had to keep fighting, though. He could do it. Making sure his feet were steady and firmly planted on the ground, he let out a low growl. Then, he ran forward for a Tackle, hoping Skipper was where he thought he was. Gary thought that this battle was going well. He could definitely use this Deerling on his team. He hoped he would get along well with his other Pokemon. He seemed to like Skipper, which was a good sign. "Now use Tail Whip and Tackle!" It was time to do some damage.
Skipper grinned when his attack worked. That when was fun. He easily skidded out of the way of the oncoming Tackle. That Growl would surely affect him later. He would worry about that when it came, though. He quickly turned around and wagged his tail at the Deerling. Then, just as quickly, he darter around to try and Tackle him. He hoped he was having a good time too. Battling as great!

It was a shame he had been unable to hit Skipper. The Deerling would just have to try again! He had to admit that this was pretty fun. He liked how he was able to attack back without worrying about getting hurt, which would have led him to run away like in the past. Battling gave him a feeling of independence and confidence. As he watched the Squirtle's tail, he became less wary, so he was hit by the Tackle. He still remained on his feet, but it had hurt some. Almost immediately, he ran back at him. It seemed like the Deerling was having a good time. Hopefully he did not regret leaving his heard. Gary was satisfied with the way the battle was progressing. The two Pokemon seemed to be fairly evenly matched. "Alright, Skipper, use Bubble!"
The Deerling was too quick for the little Squirtle. Skipper fell down on his face, but he was still able to get up. He turned and offered the Deerling a small smile. <Having fun yet?> Then he shot out bubbles at him. That attack really was awesome. He could not wait to use it on a Pokemon who would really be affected by it.
