It had already been established. It was his goal to defeat every gym trainer. Now having a team of five Pokemon, the trainer decided to try his luck against the first gym trainer. This time it would be a means to measure how far he had come. As such, he would not fret if he lost. After all, he hadn't been together long with his team; and, his ace had only recently been caught. Yes, he remembered the declaration he made to Surtur in the lava caves. He would show him a way to get treasure without resorting to stealing it. That was his mission right now.
Rameses opened the door to the gym. Being out in natural light, he had to wait for his eyes to adjust to the indoor lighting of the gym. Once he did, he crossed the threshold into the first gym. He had no idea what to expect. The trainer was without expectation because he had no idea who the gym leader was, nor the typing. He also only really had three battle tested Pokemon. It could prove to be an arduous task, but if he did lose, he would know how to better prepare himself for the repeat trip. Seeing no one immediately, he called out.
"Hello. Is anyone here?"

The battle leader made her way towards her newest challenger. The crisp, fresh grass bent soundlessly under her feet. She grinned in greeting to Ramses. She stood on the opposite side of the battle field. He could step up to his end whenever he was ready. ”So, Li’l Metapod, you ready to evolve into a butterfree?” These bug type based jokes were gold. One hundred percent, solid, high quality gold. Tossing a pokeball in the air, she waited for Ramses to get situated. ”My name’s Jenna, as I suppose you know. Who’re you, challenger?”She’d wait while he supplied his side of the story. Nodding, she’d then release her first choice. Good ole Sting would do a fine job, probably. ”I’ll explain mid-battle if you need, but this is a three-on-three battle. I can’t call back a pokemon on field, but you can substitute. Fainting is final and we’re aiming for a full knock out of each other’s teams.” She winked as she poked a thumb towards her beedrill. ”Remember! These are bug types.” Nodding, she waved her arm with flourish, gesturing towards the field. ”Your move first, kiddo.”species: beedrill name: Sting gender: male level: 12 attacks: fury attack abilities: swarm, sniper hit by: -- used: -- health: high green |

He could easily go with the obvious choice, and he would. He was save his ace for later. Luckily for Rameses, Beedrill was a Pokemon he knew all too well. During certain times of the year, they swarmed over Palette Town, and everyone had to stay inside. He knew the fury and tenacity that this particular species of bug type had. Therefore, he also knew just how to deal with it. "Surtur, I choose you!" The newly caught Charmander emerged from the confines of his device. He looked at Beedrill, and then over to Rameses. With a smirk on the flame lizard's face, he signaled that he was indeed ready for battle. Rameses caught the smirk. Hopefully, Surtur didn't think that this gym battle was going to be cakewalk. After all, the Charmander did have an attitude. He knew it was going to be a hard fought battle to get Surtur to truly trust him, but he was ready for it. "Alright Surtur, they are giving us the first move. Use ember!" The flame lizard complied. Charmander opened his mouth and spat fire in the direction of the Beedrill. The kid didn’t give her his name. Jenna frowned. ”Hey, kid, you gotta gimme your name, or you won’t get credit for this.” It was like turning in a test without any signature. Good effort, but kind of pointless. All the same, the battle leader grinned like mad when she saw the charmander. Fire types were always a good challenge. ”You know the routine, Stinger.”The beedrill nodded and crossed his huge stingers before him, taking the brunt of the ember. It hurt a lot… this charmander wasn’t playing around. Still, he saved his wings from getting burnt or his body from taking critical damage. Quick as a he could, the beedrill flew over to the charmander, red eyes gleaming brilliantly. ”Hit ‘em with that fury attack! Try to make it critical!” With his sniper ability, her beedrill’s critical hits would all do even more damage than a regular critical hit. And, even if that failed, when his swarm ability activated, he could be a bit of a holy terror… She Jenna was rather glad he was a domesticated pokemon. The beedrill obeyed, running his spear-like arm-stingers down towards the charmander. He didn’t intend to actually skewer the charmander--just, you know, rough him up a bit. Proper play sport with humongous beasts capable of terrorizing cities. Though the Beedrill was a bug type, Surtur was still somewhat at a disadvantage. Unlike the Beedrill, the Charmander was restricted to the ground. As such, the trainer would have to be precise with every attack. It really made for an intriguing battle. Smiling, Rameses knew this had the makings of a classic. His demeanor changed when the Charmander was hit, but returned when the flame lizard stood back up quickly. Surtur's smile mirrored that of his new trainer. Whatever it was, they were likely in the same mindset. "Okay, hit it the Beedrill again. Ember!" This time, instead of spitting out fire, the Charmander began to spin around until fire from his tail fired in the direction of the large bee. Jenna frowned. Whatever, not her problem if the kid didn’t get credit. Turner might chew her out if he was the one who handled her paperwork for this, but maybe she could sneak it into Sash instead…? Eh. That was future Jenna’s problem. ”Dodge it, Stinger,” the bug specialist commanded. The beedrill obeyed. Due to the fact the charmander was now aiming with his tail and had to swing around to start aiming, the beedrill had plenty of time to get out of the way. Rather than feeling, though, he hovered closer to the ground. ”Hit him with another fury attack special!” she commanded, growing a bit excited despite herself. Stinger went straight for the charmander, aiming to tip him over with this fury attack and put him in perfect position for a critical hit next round. There were certain advantages to evolving early and one of those was reaching peak physical form. "Yikes! I was so caught up in the battle. I'm sorry. My name is Rameses Khan of Palette Town." Spinning also left Surtur room to guard on defense. As the Beedrill moved in for a second fury attack, Rameses and the Charmander were both ready for it. Yes, it was true that Beedrill could fly, but the bug type was also no ace in the skies. "Surtur, smokescreen to dodge." The Charmander let go smoke from its mouth to create a dense screen. The smokescreen began to cloud the area of battle. This was not a problem for the fire type. It did however remain to be seen whether the smoke would affect the Beedrill beyond the current missed attack. Sliding out of the way of Beedrill's twin lance arms, Surtur found himself in a prime position for a counterattack. Having recovered from the smokescreen, Rameses delivered the next command in a timely fashion. "Alright Surtur, Ember." This time the Charmander spat fire from its mouth. With any luck, the flame lizard would strike its current adversary. Jenna winked and stuck out her tongue. ”Hey, hey, don’t go apologizing to me! I’m not the one who would have had to re-challenge a battle leader if you forgot!” she teased. Still, she kept her focus on the battle. Hm… smokescreen. She did always hate it when accuracy lowering moves were used. Stinger backed up a bit, none too fond of having smoke in his face. He buzzed angrily. Backing up distracted him enough to where he was hit by the ember attack.He flinched and flailed a bit, flying higher as his abdomen screamed in pain. The battle leader wasn’t too terribly impressed with her own pokemon’s display. ”Aw, that didn’t even burn your exoskeleton, this time! Get down here.”Stinger didn’t budge. He was gonna try fly over attacks from now on, thanks. Frowning, she pointed to the charmander. ”Fine, then, you dive bomb him with fury attacks. Go ahead. Do it. Maybe you’ll get lucky.”Ignoring her chilly turn of mood, the beedrill obeyed. "Heh, I suppose you are right." The dive bomb paid off as the Charmander could not avoid the twin lances for a second time. Rameses could only watch as it took longer for the fire type to retun to its feet. Still, when the Charmander did return, the smirk did not leave its face. Intriguing...Rameses thought to himself. "Your Beedrill is pretty cool. Now, it's Surtur's turn! Ember!" The Charmander gathered its energy before shooting more flame from its mouth. Hopefully for the two, the Beedrill was still in close enough proximity to get hit by the attack. Rameses also took out his last potion and placed it in his pocket. As things were currently going, it was likely that he would need to use it before the gym battle drew to a close. Ramses probably should have known better than to compliment the bug lady’s beedrill. ”You think so?!” she enthused, suddenly elated. ”Yeah, I take really good care of him!! See how bright a yellow his body is?! And, look at his eyes!! Such a nice shade of rouge!!” She… was really excited. This left Stinger all on his own for facing the attack. <Jenna!> he buzzed, trying to capture his trainer’s attention as he tried to outfly the ember. It was in vain, though. A squeal, a singe, and a falling beedrill later, Jenna frowned. Great. One pokemon down. ”... sorry, Stinger.” She returned the beedrill Ramses earned 45 points! Surtur earned 2 levels!

"That was a good round, and an intriguing choice for your second Pokemon." The Venonat did not have the aerial advantage like Beedrill, but Rameses was sure that this round would be tougher than the last. Venonat was a nasty bug type, with even nastier moves. He had seen one on t.v. once, and it made quick work of a Rhyhorn. "Alright Surtur, I'll stick with you. This one won't be like the last battle though, so be ready for anything." Surtur nodded, and Rameses took that as the cue to begin. He wasn't sure what moves Venonat had yet, but he couldn't play it safe either. He would go all out, and hopefully that would lead to the reveal. "Alright Surtur, Ember." Once more, the Charmander gathered energy. Almost instantaneously, the fire type shot its attack at the new bug type. Hm, this Ramses kid sure was a graceful winner. Better than most, anyway. She merely crossed her arms, waiting to see what would happen. Aaaand, he used the ember. Bingo. At once, Jenna pounced on it. ”Cooper, disable!” She wasn’t even focusing on getting the bug type out of the way. If they could take down the charmander’s super effective attack, they stood a much higher chance of winning this. ”Follow it up with a supersonic!” Yes, that was the plan. Stinger was all brute strength and Cooper was subtly and maneuvering. The venonat’s fur singed with the ember, but he obeyed his trainer. His antenna twitched as he used disable. With his compound eye ability, the already highly accurate move was promised an even higher chance of hitting. "Heh, I knew something crazy was bound to happen. Thank you for showing me my error." Rameses looked to the Charmander. He had done well, and now he would give the fire type some well deserved rest. He took out the Pokeball, and called for the return of Surtur. After that, he returned the device, and took out another one. Species: Charmander Name: Surtur Gender: Male Level: 14 Attacks: Smokescreen, Ember, Growl, Scratch Abilities: Blaze, Solar Power Hit By: Disable, Supersonic Used: - Health: Yellow"It's your turn. Show them what you're made of." He wound up, and threw the Pokeball. While still midair, the Pokeball opened up, and the blue Crocodile emerged. As she emerged, she ran over to Rameses, hugged his leg, and then returned to the battlefield. "Haha. I see that you are excited to see me Cammy. It's a pleasure to see you as well my friend." "Totodile!" "You're awesome. Okay, let's do this. Start with leer, and then follow up with bite." She complied. The small, blue crocodile stared down her opponent as a means to intimidate the bug type. After attempting to soften up the Venonat, the aquatic type moved in to try to crush the bug with her jaws. Jenna clenched her fist, knowing that no matter what happened she wouldn’t be able to call Cooper back. She only hoped he could manage whatever would come out next. And those moves had just hit, too… Oh well. Such were the trials of a battle leader. A bit of relief flooded the battle leader as she saw it was a totodile. ”Alright,” she coaxed when her bug was once again taken off guard. ”It’s okay, it’s okay, we can still handle this. Poisonpowder and supersonic, take it low and slow.”Given encouragement by his trainer, Cooper the venonat stood his ground after the totodile bit him. His defense was lowered a bit, but hopefully he’d be able to make it up soon. With her so close, hopefully his poisonpowder--given off by his thick, shaggy pelt--should do the trick to get some compounding damage in. Coupled with his supersonic sound, he might be able to get the totodile to beat herself into submission. ”How’d you end up with so many starter sorts?” Jenna asked, genuinely curious. "Ah! I see...intrigued are you? I've heard that they are actually pretty rare to find out in the wild. I have been fortunate to catch all of them." As he answered her, he saw Cammy being coated with some sort of powder from the Venonat. It had to be the poison powder. That would definitely do damage to Cammy over time, but he was confident in her abilities. He was soon reassured, as she shook off the effects of the supersonic. "Cammy, you are definitely an amazing girl." "Jenna, your Venonat is impressive as well. I have never had a battle debilitate my friends like this before. All the same, this battle is far from over. Cammy and I will show you our power." Cammy responded well to this. The poison was slowly taking effect, but she stood ready next to Rameses. Her eyes were trained on Cooper, and she was ready to attack. "Alright Cammy, let's try something different. Scary Face, and follow up with another bite." Cammy began to snarl and snap at the Venonat. This method of intimidation was a step above leer. Hopefully, Cammy could continue to use intimidation to her advantage because the poison was causing her to lose a step. Still, she did not want to disappoint Rameses. After her display, she again moved in with another attempt to try to bite the Venonat.
