Paul was satisfied when the Absorb took away some of the Axew's energy away. Thorn's grass moves wouldn't be as effective against the dragon type as they normally would, as Ed stated. That didn't mean Thorn wouldn't be able to defeat him. "Thorn's strength will take care of any type disadvantage," he said, annoyed at the vocal audience. He watched as the Assurance headed for Thorn, knowing he wouldn't be able to dodge it. He wanted to see what he could take right now, anyways. It seemed like he took it just fine. "Now, Tackle!" he instructed the Turtwig.
Thorn happily received the benefits of Absorb. Then, he went back to his battle stance and awaited what would come next. He was struck with the assurance before he could do anything, but he refused to fall. He gritted his teeth for a moment but then shook it off. <I can do that!> he said in response to Paul's command. As fast as he could, he ran towards the Axew, prepared for the Tackle. The Axew was pleased that his attack had hit the mark. However, he knew this was far from over. This Turtwig was strong, and he was going to have to come up with something better if he wanted to beat him. His speed allowed him to barely miss his opponent's Tackle. He knew he would slow down if he lost much more energy. He was going to have to be careful. He was not usually one to use defensive moves are status changes, but he figured it would be a wise move in this situation. He stood still and sent a menacing Leer towards Thorn. It would be much easier to attack once the Turtwig's defense was lowered.

A Chatot was circling the forest. When she heard the sounds of battle, she immediately flew down. She was pleased to see a trainer battling a wild Pokemon. Perhaps this guy would be a good recruit. Her master was going to be happy. She settled in a tree near Paul and listened for any phrases she could take back to her own trainer.

Paul was intrigued by the speed of the Axew. They would see how he fared after he actually got hit. He did not worry about the Leer; he was prepared for it. "Use Growth and then Tackle, but don't run at him at first!" With Growth, his attack power would increase. He found it to be a very useful move.
Thorn skidded to a halt when he missed the Axew. Well, the Axew had moved out of the way. It was still a miss, though, and it disappointed him. He would have to work harder! He didn't want to upset Paul. When he turned to face the Axew, he was struck with fear at the Leer and expected an attack to come after. Instead, he was told what to do. He was going to try Tackle again. This time he hoped it would work. <Here it goes.> First, he made his body grow larger. Then, he ran forward to the right a little, away from the Axew. Before he ran past him, though, he quickly turned sharply and aimed for him.

The Axew watched warily as Thorn used Growth. That did not look good. He was going to have to try to find a way to dodge the oncoming attack or suffer some real damage. He waited until the Turtwig started moving towards them. Then he quickly dashed out of the way. However, he misjudged his opponent's intentions, and he was cut off by the grass type. The Tackle hit him hard, sending him flying. He grunted as he slowly got up. He had taken a lot of damage, but this was not over yet. He faced Thorn and let out a shock wave of pure rage. The good thing about Dragon Rage was that it always inflicted damage.

Paul nodded in satisfaction when Thorn struck the Axew. It looked like he had done some significant damage. "Withdraw!" he said as soon as the Axew faced Thorn to attack again. Thorn just stood there, though. He seemed to still be affected by the Leer and too scared of the oncoming attack to move. Paul frowned as his Turtwig was hit by the Dragon Rage. "Thorn, you need to toughen up! You're never going to get stronger if you let things scare you so much. Now, Razor Leaf, let's go!"
Thorn felt happy when he was able to finally make contact with the Axew. Growing was fun! It made him more intimidating and strong! When he looked back him, though, he grew scared. He could remember the Leer, and that rage was scary too. Unable to move or even go into his shell, he got hit. <Ouch,> he mumbled from the ground. He stood back up, feeling weaker, but he could still battle. He frowned at what Paul said, and his ears drooped. He was right. <Okay,> he said softly. Half-heartedly, he flung sharp-edged leaves at the other Pokemon. It was a good day to explore the forest. Alice the Chikorita and her trainer Kiki walked together along the path. They were searching for berries and herbs that could be used in healing Pokemon. Alice loves being outdoors. The beautiful trees and the sweet smell of plants made her feel happy inside. She was glad her trainer enjoyed the same things as her. They really got along great. Her interest was piqued when she heard the sounds of battling up ahead.
Kiki heard them as well. "That sounds like Paul," she said. As she got closer, she could see Edmund watching a battle going on between Paul's Turtwig Thorn and what looked like a wild Axew. She stopped a little ways back to watch the interaction. She did not want to disturb them, but she did not think her Chikorita would want to leave.
She was right. Alice was excited to see Thorn. It looked like he was winning his battle! She wanted to call out to him and encourage him, but she knew his trainer could be cranky about stuff like that, so she held back. She would simply congratulate him once he was finished. Maybe then they could get to work on one of their plans.

The Axew was pleased he was able to hit his mark. If this Turtwig was not at such a high level, he knew he would have won by now. He was quick to move out of the way of the sharp leaves flying towards him. However, his reduced strength prohibited him from being able to dodge all of them. He hid the pain from being hit by a couple leaves. He was still fine, and he could still win this. He decided to use his strongest attack again, Assurance. It helped that he had been hurt after the last move. Now the attack would even even stronger. This was it!

The Chatot felt satisfied that she had recorded some good phrases from the trainer. She kept them in her memory as she flew off to report back to her master.

Paul had not expected much from the Razor Leaf. When the Axew began to attack again, he did not tell Thorn to do anything, even though withdrawing into his shell would protect him from some of the damage. While the Axew was not as strong as Thorn, his Assurance was a powerful attack. Still, he watched his Turtwig take the hit. Now, he was pretty weak. Perfect. "Use Absorb!" With his energy below 1/3, his ability Overgrow would take effect, increasing his grass moves by 50%.
Thorn felt better when some of his leaves managed to hit the Axew. Then, Assurance was coming at him again. When Paul did not command him to do anything, he looked back at him, hoping he would say something. Not even Withdraw? Nothing. Swallowing, he looked back at the Axew and put on a brave face while standing his ground. He would not be afraid like Paul told him. When it was all over, he was still standing. However, he nearly felt drained. For a weaker Pokemon, he sure fought hard! He smiled in relief when he heard 'Absorb.' That was his favorite. Eagerly, he concentrated on the Axew, making green lights come out of him and attach themselves to him so that he could suck some of his energy.

The was no way for the Axew to escape the oncoming Absorb. It growled as the last of his energy was stolen from him. At least he had put up a good fight, and these two were worthy opponents. His fate was in their hands. The Pokemon fell limp on the ground, fainted.

<Yay!> Alice exclaimed when the Axew fainted. Thorn had won! She grinned as she bounded over to her friend. <Great job!>
Kiki smiled as she watched her Pokemon. She hoped Paul would not mind the interruption now that the Pokemon he was battling had fainted. She walked closer to the grass types but did not say anything. She did not want any confrontation that was not necessary. She wondered if Paul was planning on catching the Axew, who seemed to have put up a pretty good fight.

Paul was pleased when the Axew fainted. It had out up a good fight, and he liked what he had seen from him. Still, he needed to use his Pokedex to look over him. He did not say anything to Thorn. Instead, he just proceeded to take out a Pokeball. He was about to throw it at the fainted Axew when a Chikorita appeared. It was Alice, and Kiki was there now too. After a glance at them, he brought his attention back to what he was going to do without saying anything and threw the Pokeball.
Thorn smiled when the Axew fainted. Yay! He did it! He loved winning battles. It was so much fun! He knew he couldn't jump up and down, though, so he remained where he was. The sound of a familiar voice sent his little heart racing. He spun around, his face lighting up at the sight of Alice. <Hi! Thanks! You saw me?> He felt quite proud at defeating his first wild Pokemon. He had battled Nate's Pokemon and the virtual Pokemon, but never a wild one before, which were always tricky because you never knew what to expect.

Alice smiled and nodded. <Yeah, I saw you. Just at the end, though. You fought well.> It seemed like Thorn's training was going great. Now, if only his trainer would lighten up. Maybe his socks were on too tight. The Chikorita glanced between Paul and Kiki quickly. Paul was focused on catching the Pokemon, while Kiki was silently observing him. Alice leaned in closer to Thorn. <Remember the plan Andy came up with?> she whispered.

The Pokeball wobbled several times, but then it grew still.

A tall Pokemon trainer with green hair emerged form the trees. He stopped when he was a couple of yards away from Paul. "Greetings," he said in a smooth voice. "My name is Duke. I do not mean to intrude, but I happened to catch the end of your battle with that Axew. I was quite impressed. I was wondering if you would engage me in a one-on-one battle. I would like to test your skills against mine." A broad smile spread across his face, but there was something off about it that one would notice if he or her was observant.

Once the Pokeball stopped moving, Paul walked over and bent down to pick it up. He took out his Pokedex, pushed a couple buttons, and held it over the Pokeball. He nodded to himself. It looked promising just like during the battle, so he would be keeping it. He looked up when he heard someone approach, putting his Pokedex and Pokeball away as he listened to him. It seemed a bit odd, and he wasn't sure what to make of this guy, but from the sound of it he could be a worthy opponent. He was interested in finding out. Besides, battling trainers was of good use to him. He nodded once to him. "Alright."
Thorn grinned in delight. <Thanks!> He wondered if he would be able to see her battle a little too. That would be exciting. The plan? Right! He felt excitement run through him. <Yeah,> he whispered back. Taking a peek at Paul and Kiki, it appeared they were both preoccupied. <Let's do it before Paul realizes he didn't put me in my Pokeball.> He didn't want to go back there. Not when Alice was here!
OOC: "Maybe his socks were on too tight." XD
