Appraising Pokemon [Open]

Paul ignored Kiki and continued to follow the Lillipup, keeping his gaze forward. If Thorn and Alice had left before his battle with that trainer had started, then that was a long time to wander in this forest. He hoped they hadn't gone that far, but he wouldn't be surprised if they did. He frowned at Kiki's question. Why was she asking? Did it matter? "Not unless I have a reason to," he said without looking at her. Just to give her something because he had a feeling she would need it to keep her quiet or at least lessen her disliking of his answer, he added, "I talk to my brother sometimes." Before coming to Cherilli, his brother had told him he would call now and then to see how he was doing. Paul thought it unnecessary, but he couldn't stop him. He had also agreed to take care of his Pokemon when necessary because he was a breeder.
Lava cave? That sounded scary, especially considering he was a grass type. It sounded like a place Paul would want to go sometime too. He had thought he had seen him looking at a map of it sometime in their dorm. Beedrill? Those sounded scary too, though they were better than the haunted house or lava cave. <Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. When do you usually collect herbs? And where is it? Maybe I can make sure Paul and I are near there doing something. It doesn't take much to get him to leave his dorm and go outside somewhere.> He was always off on his own training, looking for Pokemon, or something like that.

Paul's answer displeased Kiki. He only talked to people if he had a reason? Well, that could be taken as a very introvert statement. Introverts only talked to others for a reason, but the reason was often enjoying the company of others or engaging in deep conversation. She doubted this was what he had in mind. She was surprised when he mentioned talking to his brother. He had a brother? She wondered if he was like him or if he was friendlier and normal. The latter would be better, but then why was Paul the way he was? It could not be temperament alone, for everyone had at least some desire for friendship. "That's good," she said. Family was important. Speaking of family... She could not help but voice the question that came into her mind next. "What about your parents? Do you talk to them?" She was not trying to be nosy. Paul did not make much sense to her, and she simply wanted to figure him out.
Alice was pleased that Thorn liked her idea. They could so do this! She hoped he really would be able to get Paul to go out with him. They were going to have to plan this carefully. <Usually we go out on Saturday morning,> she said. <Once you enter the forest, we go left to a clearing. I've seen a Beedrill nest.> She hoped this plan would not go awry. She did not want anyone to get hurt. But her trainer was a healer, and she could fix anything that could go wrong. Hmm... She wondered if they could use that to their advantage as well. She bet it would be harder to get Paul to like Kiki than to get Kiki to like Paul. It was just a hunch, though.

Paul did not know what Kiki thought of his answer, not that it mattered. She seemed to take it, though. Good. He started at her next question, but he kept his composure. His parents? He hadn't thought of them in a long time. The mention of them brought unpleasant feelings and memories to him. He concentrated on the Pokemon in front of him. "Can't," he said simply and without any real emotion. "My mom died, and my dad left after that." He put his hands in his jacket pockets and kept facing forward as they walked. He pushed away the thoughts and feelings, which was easy because he had gotten better at doing that over the years. He had learned how to not give anything away by his expression or voice whenever that topic arose. He was over it all, anyways.
Thorn listened carefully to what Alice said, doing his best to put it in his memory. To the left of the entrance to the forest. Saturday morning. Got it. He was sure he could get Paul there, no problem. <Okay. We'll be there.> He smiled, happy they had another plan. If it didn't work, at least they would have gotten to be together again.

Cody led them out of the tall grass. They were now walking among the trees. The scent was getting stronger! Kiki frowned at Paul's answer. He sounded indifferent to what he was saying, but she knew he could conceal his emotions pretty well. A situation like that would affect anyone. "I'm sorry," she said softly. She wondered if there was something deeper to it than he was letting on. She felt a small amount of sympathy towards him, which was odd considering his attitude. It was probably her healing nature. She liked solving problems and helping others. She had not seen much hope for Paul, but maybe she had been too quick to judge. She could try being nice to him regardless of how he treated her, since that seemed to work with Pokemon. Besides, she had to at least tolerate him if Alice was insistent on being with Thorn. Who was she to destroy too love? She could not think of anything else to say, so she focused on her Lillipup in front of her. The land began to slope down...
Alice smiled back at Thorn. <Great!> This was going to be good. She could not wait to get started. Now that that was settled, she wondered how long it would take for their trainers to find them. She felt kind of bad. She did not want Kiki to worry about her. <Maybe we should head back soon.> She also did not want Paul to be too mad at Thorn. That would not be good. OOC: He's over it all. Right...

Paul shrugged Kiki's words away. Everyone always said that. He remembered hearing it a lot back in Sinnoh. It never really meant anything; it was just the proper thing to say. Or the person just didn't know what else to say; 'I'm sorry' was always safe. He kept his eyes on the Lillipup. It was leading them into trees now. He hoped they were getting closer. He would wonder if they were even heading in the right direction, but the Lillipup, being a dog-like Pokemon, seemed to have a good sense of direction. He looked up when the land began to slope down, trying to see if he could see the two grass types yet. All he saw was a lot of thick brush in the way.
Thorn frowned slightly. So soon? He knew he and Alice would be together again soon, but he still didn't want to leave. He looked over at the entrance. Their trainers were going to find them eventually, and prolonging the inevitable was not going to help them. They had spent some time together and had made a plan, so the time had been well spent. He nodded. <Paul is going to be mad at me,> he said with a worried frown. He didn't like it when his trainer was mad at him, but that tended to happen quite often. Thorn never meant to disobey him or make him angry. He only wanted to have fun and be with Alice.
OOC: You don't believe him? D:

Yes, Paul was going to be mad at him. It was too bad. Could he not see that Thorn had the best of intentions? If he gave him a little freedom, this would not happen. He was just doing what he had to in order to survive. The Chikorita did not know how all of Paul's other Pokemon could stand being so isolated. Social contact was a necessity. <It will be fine,> she said. Once Paul realized how great friends were, everything would be good.
Silence did not usually bother Kiki, but it was uncomfortable with Paul. Was it like hat with everyone? She stopped when Cody pushed his way through some thick brush. She frowned slightly. Did their Pokemon lay behind the brush? There was only one way to find out. She followed the Lillipup, struggling to get through. Then she could see that they were in a wide clearing with a cave up ahead. And there was Alice and Thorn! "Hey, guys," she said, smiling in relief. She was glad they were safe.
Cody appeared happy as well. He wagged his tail as he approached the grass types. <Hi! I found you.> He sat down and smiled proudly. OOC: No...

Paul became lost in his thoughts as they continued to walk, ignoring the fact that Kiki was there. When they got to the brush, he pushed it out of the way, though it was a bite difficult. He frowned slightly when the brush Kiki had pushed away swung back at him since he was walking behind her. Soon, they were out and he would see the wide clearing that lay behind it. Once he spotted Thorn, Paul retrieved his Pokeball and returned him. "I'll talk to you later," he said roughly as he did so. There. Now, he could leave. He scanned the place first, though. It was an interesting place, a good training area. Maybe he could come back to train here; it was very secluded. He wouldn't have to worry about rude interruptions. Was that a cave? He took a step towards it, curious.

Drakan flew over to the humans, and let out a small noise, as he tapped Paul on the shoulder.

Kiki glanced at Paul as he returned Thorn. Was that it? Well, it had been a long day. "Ok, time to rest," she said to her own Pokemon. After returning Cody and Alice, she turned to leave. She paused as she considered something. Looking back, she said, "See you later, Paul. Have a nice day." It did not hurt to be polite, right? OOC: Paul, I can start the next thread if you want. It takes place soon after this one, so Alice can still be a Chikorita.

The sound of his name brought Paul to look back at Kiki and away from his thoughts. Have a nice day? He did not respond. That was weird. He just brushed it off and turned back towards the cave. A lot had occurred that day and his Pokemon did need to rest (one needed a talking to), so he decided to leave it alone for another day. Hopefully, he would be able to find this place again. He waited a few moments before turning and heading out in order to avoid bumping into Kiki.
